About Superlunar TS-440 1.1.0 for Mac

Superlunar TS-440 is a cassette deck emulator plugin developed by Superlunar for use inside a digital audio workstation (DAW) on macOS and Windows. Rather than offering one generic "cassette" effect, TS-440 models the full signal path of 20 individual cassette recorders — from the warm JFET input stage of the original TEAC 144 to the punchier op-amp circuits found in the Tascam 424 series — each with its own preamp coloration, EQ topology, head response, and transport behavior. Alongside the 20 modeled machines, TS-440 includes four tape formulations (Type I Ferric, Type II Chrome, Type III Ferrichrome, and Type IV Metal), each contributing a distinct style of compression and saturation. Beyond tone-shaping, the plugin gives users hands-on control over the physical degradation of tape and transport mechanics — wear, drift, wow and flutter, dropouts, hiss, and tape aging — allowing sound to move anywhere from clean, subtle analog warmth to fully destroyed, unstable lo-fi texture. Version 1.1.0 followed the plugin's initial March 2026 release and focused specifically on latency: it fixed inaccurate latency reporting, resolved clicks that occurred at higher Stability settings, and reduced the plugin's overall processing latency, which now updates dynamically whenever the tape stage is bypassed.

Key Features

TS

440 recreates the preamp characteristics, EQ topology, and head response of 20 real cassette machines — including the TEAC 144, Tascam Porta One, Tascam 424 MkI/MkIII, Sony TC-D5M, Sony WM-D6C, and more — each contributing a genuinely different tonal balance rather than functioning as an interchangeable skin over one algorithm.

Cranking the input overdrives the modeled preamp and pushes it into harmonic saturation, while the tape stage can also be bypassed entirely so TS

440 functions purely as a channel strip using only the preamp coloration.

Independent Wear, Stability, and Hiss controls recreate years of physical tape and transport degradation

including drift, wow and flutter, dropouts, and tape ageing – allowing users to dial in anything from subtle imperfection to completely unstable, degraded textures.

A set of 33 built

in presets spans the plugin's full range, from clean studio-master tones to fully destroyed tape effects, providing quick starting points that can also be used as a base for custom sounds.

The plugin now updates latency dynamically when bypassing the tape stage, correcting inaccurate latency reporting of previous versions for more reliable use in time

sensitive mixing sessions. (version 1.1.0)
