NEXUS5 is a virtual instrument plugin from reFX Audio Software Inc., billed by the developer as "the ultimate super synth" and the most ambitious release in the long-running Nexus series since it launched in November 2024. For years, Nexus was best known for its huge, ready-to-use preset library, but was often criticized as a closed system that gave producers little room to build their own sounds. NEXUS5 rebuilds the engine from the ground up around an open architecture, so users get the same design tools reFX's own in-house sound designers use. At the core of NEXUS5 are eight advanced sound-generating engines — Virtual Analog, Sampler, Wavetable, Time Stretcher, Retro Sampler, Grain, Cloud, and FM — which can be combined and layered freely. Producers can load their own single samples, multi-samples, or entire sample libraries directly into the engine, complete with automatic slicing and looping, and shape the result with a built-in sample editor featuring slicing, looping, and crossfade tools. On the effects side, NEXUS5 adds studio-grade processors including a new Bucket Brigade Delay, Particle Reverb, Vowel Filter, Rotary, and Pusher, alongside dozens of other effects for shaping tone and character.
